The PH Miracle

The PH Miracle: Balance Your Diet, Reclaim Your Health by Dr. Robert and Shelley Young, (c)  2008 by Wellness Central.

The basics of pH:

  • The blood pH is the most important measurement for your health; the blood has to be maintained within a strict pH range, which is mildly basic* or alkaline
  • The body will go to great lengths to maintain that pH level, even including messing up other systems of the body to do so
  • Overacidity is at the root of all sickness and disease and it is what is keeping you fat. It “sets the stage for chaos, opening the door to sickness and disease.”
  • Your body is vulnerable to germs ONLY when there is overacidity. In an alkaline environment, germs can’t even grab hold! That’s why if you start getting sick, start eating veggies and fruits and get rid of your crap food (and drinks).
  • 80% of your diet should include alkaline-forming foods and 20% should be acid-forming
  • The ‘food pyramid’ has an overall acidifying affect
  • It would take 20 cups of something alkaline to neutralize 1 cup of milk and 240 cups of alkaline stuff to neutralize 1 cup of ice cream
  • In general it can take up to 20 times the amount of alkaline food to neutralize a dose of acidic food

Things that are Alkaline:

  • raw uncooked vegetables & greens like:
    • asparagus
    • beets
    • broccoli
    • brussels sprouts
    • burdock
    • cabbage
    • carrots
    • cauliflower
    • celery
    • chives
    • cucumbers
    • eggplant
    • endive
    • garlic
    • green & yellow squash
    • green beans
    • greens – spinach, mustard greens, collards, kale, lettuce, watercress, swiss chard
    • horseradish
    • leeks
    • okra
    • onions
    • parsley
    • parsnips
    • peas
    • radishes
    • rhubarb stalks
    • red & yellow & green peppers
    • rutabagas
    • salsify
    • scallions
    • sea vegetables – nori, wakame, hijiki
    • soybeans fresh
    • sprouted grains, beans, or seeds
    • turnips
    • water chestnuts
    • zucchini
  • wheat grass, barley grass, straw grass, shave grass, dog grass, kamut grass, alfalfa grass
  • fruits like: lemon, lime, avocado, tomato, unripe banana

  • pH drops that you add to purified water or decaf tea
  • Apollinaris water
  • baking soda, cayenne pepper
  • tofu
  • sprouted seeds, nuts, & grains
  • sesame seeds, cumin seeds, fennel seeds, caraway seeds, almonds
  • flax seed oil, evening primrose oil, fresh coconut water
  • pure water

Foods that are Acid-Forming (should only be 20% or less of your diet):

  • cooked foods, including microwaved foods (heat destroys nutrients & enzymes)
  • most packaged foods
  • meat
  • dairy/eggs
  • canned beans
  • starchy legumes – kidney beans, pinto beans, adzuki beans, black beans, split peas, black-eye peas, chickpeas, white beans, lima beans
  • mushrooms or any other fungus
  • wheat, bread, baked goods
  • condiments, pickled vegetables, msg
  • rice
  • corn, peanuts
  • grains
  • nicotine
  • alcohol, juice, coffee (even decaf), soda, black tea
  • sugar
  • sweetener
  • any fruit not listed in the alkaline list**

Sort of neutral stuff, or only slightly acid-forming, or eat-in-moderation-only stuff:

  • grains like buckwheat groats, spelt, amaranth, quinoa
  • high-carb veggies – potatoes, acorn squash, butternut squash, pumpkin, yams, sweet potatoes
  • watermelon, grapefruit

I recommend reading or at least browsing through this book. It will educate you on how the body reacts to the crap you put in it and will make you see how much you are beating yourself up inside but won’t know it until it’s too late (such as when you will be diagnosed with a disease or cancer). The body does all it can to take on the acid you keep feeding it, but over time cells die, bone and muscle get depleted, and other resources will inevitably fail. Bad skin, headaches, other minor issues are the beginning signs and you should heed them. They will turn into worse stuff later if you don’t change the way you eat.

You can measure your pH through saliva or urine using pH strips. I use these every few days to make sure I’m on the green side. My mom, after I told her about pH and gave her a strip to try, yelped aloud in the bathroom after seeing how bright yellow her strip was. Yellow means acid and green means alkaline. I asked her what she had to eat so far that day and it consisted of coffee, toast with butter, and later a soda. There you go.

You will notice really cool stuff happening to your body when you switch to a higher-alkaline diet. My changes were these: hair not as greasy as quickly, body temperature more regulated, required less sleep, un-smelly bowel movements (no joke! It’s amazing), new hairs started sprouting on my head and old ones weren’t falling out so much, had more energy throughout the day (no more sleepy time at 2pm every day), and nails became strong and long. Oh and of course the best of all (besides being healthier overall) was that I lost weight so that I could fit into a size 4 which I haven’t done since 7th grade.

Enjoy! And please post responses with your questions and your own results of your new way of eating. Remember to do this diet change gradually or you might experience some (normal) detox effects like headaches or skin breakouts.

*Bases can be thought of as the chemical opposite of acids. A reaction between an acid and base is called neutralization. [Wikipedia.org]

**Fruit isn’t unhealthy; it just contains sugar which ferments and makes the acid environment stronger. Re-incorporate fruits after a few months into this new way of eating, and only have it as an occasional treat. I have a hard time following this rule.
