Low(er) Calorie Hummus

IMG_1224

My mother’s best friend and her daughter have started a new beauty detox regimen and I snuck a few copies from my mom’s book Beauty Detox Solution. A shout-out to Phyllis and Shawn and Jeannie! 🙂

Here is the first one I have made, and it is delicious! The reason it is lower in calories than traditional hummus is because instead of using chickpeas, it uses zucchini. Chickpeas, Kimberly Snyder explains, make us gassy and bloated because they are a mixture of protein and starch. You therefore have better digestion with this type of hummus. I like to use this as a salad dressing.

  • 2 zucchinis chopped
  • 3/4 cup tahini
  • 2T nutritional yeast
  • 1/2 cup fresh lemon juice
  • 3 garlic cloves
  • 2t Celtic sea salt

Put all in blender (hopefully you have a Vitamix) until smooth. Use for a veggie dip or salad dressing.

Blood Type Diets

This information is definitely worth checking out. There are tons of people who have erased all their health issues (and lost weight too, yay!) just by eating right for their specific blood type! I am only reading a supplemental text that goes along with the main blood type book (Eat Right 4 Your Type: The Individualized Diet Solution to Staying Healthy, Living Longer & Achieving Your Ideal Weight by Peter J. D’Adamo), but I intend to read that one soon. Meanwhile, here are some notes on eating for your blood type in general that I gathered from Blood Type A: Food, Beverage, and Supplement Lists by Dr. Peter J D’Adamo:

  • Your blood type is the “essential defining factor in your health profile”
  • Many foods stick to cells of certain blood types but not to others so that certain food might be bad for one blood type but good for another
  • Chemical reactions between blood and food we eat determine either a good or bad effect on your blood; when you consume foods incompatible with your blood type, certain proteins go and target your organs and blood cells start to stick in that area, therefore interfering with the normal body processes for those organs {NOT GOOD}
  • The blood type diet will “restore the natural protective functions of your immune system, reset your metabolic clock, and clear your blood of dangerous agglutinating lectins [the ‘certain proteins’ I referred to earlier]” Continue reading

Lance Armstrong’s Latest Diet

He has taken on a partially vegan diet and the results have amazed him: “Even when you’re training really hard, it’s normal that you would have certain things for lunch or certain things for breakfast, and then have this dip, or almost like a food coma … I don’t experience that anymore. My energy level has never been this consistent, and not just consistent, but high. I’m a big napper — I couldn’t even take a nap these days if I wanted to. The other thing — I expected to get rid of that dip, but I didn’t expect the mental side of it, and the sharpness and the focus that I’ve noticed.”

Vegans Doing Amazing Things

Further information on the following awesome people is at the bottom of this post in various hyperlinks. There are a LOT of them, so I will have to make a Part II to this post at a future time.

* Jennifer Buls & Virginia Buls: Their business Absolute Treats entered into the National Cupcake Championship in 2011 with 55 other entries. Their cupcake wasn’t very unique looking but the criteria wasn’t about presentation, it was about the taste. Believe it or not, their cupcake WON the entire championship — and it was a vegan cupcake! It beat all the others which had eggs and butter! The tasters quoted: “[the cupcake] was head and shoulders above the rest…Her victory is all the more remarkable given that it’s a vegan cake” (Andrew Williams of British Baker). Continue reading

HIIT: High Intensity Inverval Training

I discovered HIIT on YouTube one day when I was putting together my own mix of exercises via iMovie on the Mac. I was watching a video from user CharlieJames1975 and was bewitched by the tiny girl’s accent and killer body. Currently there is an English girl doing the videos, named Lisa, but it was Zuzanna who originally got me going on the bodyrock.tv kick.

HIIT is where you do very intense moves that incorporate all muscles of your body into a short amount of time (usually 10-20 minutes). Continue reading

Book Overview: The Kind Diet by Alicia Silverstone

Here are things I want to share with you that I learned from Alicia.

Animals on Factory Farms

  • Animals at the slaughterhouse are in constant terror. Being scared produces body chemicals that affect the muscles and other parts of the body, namely cortisol and adrenaline. Humans can become stressed from eating this meat. You eat fear, despair, and anger when you eat the meat of a dead animal.
  • Slaughterhouse wastes are used in livestock feed (that you end up eating second hand) like blood, bone, remains of cats and dogs
  • Animals on factory farms are pumped with hormones to increase their mass. Hormones are not good — we have our own and don’t need more — because they lead to cancers like breast and prostate
  • Mercury damages your brain, kidneys, and lungs: swordfish, mackerel, and tuna have the highest levels of mercury out of all fish
  • “The meat industry has created entities like the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association, the American Meat Institute, and the National Pork Producers Council, which spend millions and millions of dollars on print and television ads to cast their products in a positive light, despite evidence to the contrary” Continue reading
