Food-borne Illness & Prevention

This week in nutrition class I learned about food safety. People who are most at risk for food-borne illnesses are elderly people, pregnant women, and people who are already sick or have a disease. But anyone can be a victim of unsafe food handling whether by yourself unknowingly in the kitchen or from eating at establishments where workers have not completely followed their food safety rules. Bacteria are the primary causers of food-borne infections. The three most common are  Campylobacter jejuni, Salmonella, and E. coli. Continue reading

Book Overview: Green For Life

Green For Life by Victoria Boutenko (c) 2005 Raw Family Publishing

I recommend you check out this quick read for a couple of reasons:

  1. you will learn about plant life and the fruits they bear – the why’s and how’s of it, which is fascinating
  2. you will come to understand vegetables and greens classifications correctly
  3. you will discover the relationship between chimpanzee and human diets (and why we should start leaning more towards their way of eating and away from our processed foods)
  4. you will see the proof for yourself in her experiment results on people she asked to drink green smoothies every day for a certain time period – all of those people discovered health benefits and even went on to continue green drinks even after the trial period was over. Many of them lost weight and curbed major sugar and other bad cravings.

My Current Weight-Management Strategies

After reading the book PH Miracle and following its guidelines I lost weight without meaning to. My original intent was to get healthier and stop putting crap into my body. I learned about the acid-alkaline balance, and it proved every bit true because I saw the results myself. I got down to an amazing size 4, which I haven’t been since like 7th or 8th grade. BUT… I gradually slipped out of the PH guidelines and re-added too many carbs to my diet. Bad idea. It wasn’t a lot of weight gain all at once, it was gradual. But it was enough that all of the sudden none of my 4’s fit any longer. So sad. I had to bring out the old 6’s. So now I am trying to get back into high-alkaline foods and reducing acid-forming foods. Continue reading

The PH Miracle

The PH Miracle: Balance Your Diet, Reclaim Your Health by Dr. Robert and Shelley Young, (c)  2008 by Wellness Central.

The basics of pH:

  • The blood pH is the most important measurement for your health; the blood has to be maintained within a strict pH range, which is mildly basic* or alkaline
  • The body will go to great lengths to maintain that pH level, even including messing up other systems of the body to do so
  • Overacidity is at the root of all sickness and disease and it is what is keeping you fat. It “sets the stage for chaos, opening the door to sickness and disease.”
  • Your body is vulnerable to germs ONLY when there is overacidity. In an alkaline environment, germs can’t even grab hold! That’s why if you start getting sick, start eating veggies and fruits and get rid of your crap food (and drinks). Continue reading
